Cardiovascular risk reduction has been attributed to a Mediterranean diet in the past, but this claim has lacked strong evidence until now. Results of the first major long-term clinical trial that demonstrated benefit of a Mediterranean diet in cardiovascular risk were recently published in NEJM. Researchers assigned 7,447 people in Spain with high cardiovascular risk but without heart disease to adhere to a Mediterranean diet including olive oil or nuts versus simply a low-fat diet and found a 30% decreased risk of major cardiovascular events in those on the Mediterranean diet.Do you feel this study provides stronger support for yourrecommendation of these dietary changes to your patients with high cardiovascular risk?
