Smoking e-cigarettes at a higher voltage can can people to have more exposure to formaldehyde, according to a recent study published in the New England Journal of Medicine. Researchers from Portland State University took flavored nicotine liquid made by Halo Cigs and tested it in a personal vaporizer from Innokin. The vaporizer allows consumers to adjust the voltage from 3.3V to 5.0V. The higher the voltage the greater the nicotine kick, but also the greater the amount of formaldehyde. Inhaled as a gas, formaldehyde has been linked to an increased risk of nasopharyngeal cancer and leukemia. Researchers concluded that the life-time risk of developing formaldehyde-related cancer was roughly 1 in 200 for high-voltage e-cigarettes versus 1 in 1,000 for cigarettes – at least five times higher. They found no increased risk for people smoking at a low voltage. What are you thoughts on smoking cigarettes vs. e-cigarettes? How often do you counsel patients about e-cigarettes?

According to new study from the Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School, consuming tea and citrus juices could correspond to a lower risk of developing ovarian cancer. This was the first large-scale study to determine the role of flavanoids on ovarian cancer, and followed 172,000 patients over three decades. The research team found that women who consumed flavonols and flavanones, which are two sub-types of flavanoids, experienced much less of a risk of developing epithelial ovarian cancer. Since these flavanoids are found in tea and citrus juices and fruits, it is fairly easy to incorporate them to get the associated benefits. This was a promising find, as roughly 20,000 women are diagnosed with ovarian cancer in the United States each year and it also happens to be the fifth leading cause of death from cancer among women. Everyone knows that eating vegetables and fruits pertains to a healthier lifestyle, but have you ever wondered how much impact it really has? A new study covered by The Washington Post evaluated the eating habits of 65,000 people over 12 years and discovered that people who ate seven or more portions of fruits and vegetables were able to reduce their risk for cancer by 25 percent and cardiovascular complications by 31 percent! Researchers found that for every daily fresh serving of vegetables, one was able to reduce their overall risk of death by 16 percent. This is the first study published that has attempted to define the benefits one receives per portion of food; will this give cause to re-evaluate your diet?

The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force has published its recommendations in the latest issue of Annals of Internal Medicine (draft released in November of 2013.) The recommendations suggests that there is not enough evidence to show if there is benefit or harm in taking multivitamins to prevent heart disease and cancer, aside from two exceptions. They recommend against the use of vitamin E and beta-carotene in preventing heart disease and cancer. People who are at a high risk of lung cancer, such as smokers, had a higher chance of developing lung cancer when using beta-carotene. The task force focused only on heart disease and cancer and there are no recommendations on taking vitamins and supplements for overall health and wellness or for filling nutrition gaps.

Investigators from Indiana University observed that adolescents and young adults who participated in music therapy were more able to cope with their cancer treatment than those who did not participate. Music therapy included writing song lyrics, producing sound recordings, assembling video images and completing an interactive multimedia story. The patient population tested had to undergo stem-cell transplantation, and 100 days after the procedure the music group continued to report significantly better social integration.

Consumer Reports, the World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer, and the state of California announce that a chemical known as 4-methylimidazole or 4-Mel found in many soft drinks and foods may be carcinogenic. 4-Mel is labeled simply as “caramel coloring” on U.S. product labels and it gives foods its golden-brown color. The state of California has placed a limit on 4-Mel containing products to 29 micrograms. However, Consumer Reports has found that many products still exceeded the permitted limit and the same products outside of California contained amounts even greater. What is the best way to educate about dangers of consuming foods containing caramel coloring?

Red meat consumption is in the news again. A recent study published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology evaluated the association between high consumption of red or processed meat and colon cancer prognosis. Researchers found that people who consume 10 servings of red or processed meat per week before diagnosis, are at a higher chance of dying from colon cancer than people who consume 2 servings per week. Current Biology published a study regarding the best way to store fruits and vegetables to obtain the most benefit. The study found fruits and vegetables follow a 24-hour plant clock. Food crops can alter the internal chemical level throughout the day in order to ward off pests. Storing fruits and vegetables under the light-dark cycles helps them to preserve more nutrients. Glucosinates, a chemical with anti-cancer property is produced by cabbage in the day; refrigerated cabbage on the opposite produced less glucosinates. Further tests revealed many other crops (e.g., lettuce, spinach, courgettes, sweet potatoes, carrots and blueberries) also follow the same light-dark cycle. Coffee prevents early events in tamoxifen-treated breast cancer patients and modulates hormone receptor status
A Swedish study published in the journal Cancer Causes and Control suggested that the risk of breast cancer recurring in 600 patients taking tamoxifen was reduced with coffee consumption. Researchers evaluated hormone receptor status and also found modifications related to coffee consumption. What are your thoughts about this study – would the results encourage you to recommend coffee consumption to your breast cancer patients?
