Coffee consumption reduces mortality risk from liver cirrhosis

coffee blogRecent research published in Hepatology has shown that consuming at least 2 cups of coffee daily may reduce the risk of death from cirrhosis, estimated in 2004 WHO report to be 1.3% of total deaths worldwide. The investigators examined the mortality from cirrhosis from consuming coffee, alcohol, tea, and soda. They found that drinking at least 20 g of alchol daily increased risk of cirrhosis mortality while drinking at least 2 cups of coffee was associated with 66% reduction of death from non-viral hepatitis related cirrhosis. Considering its positive and negative effects, what are your current patient recommendations related to coffee consumption?

Coffee prevents early events in tamoxifen-treated breast cancer patients and modulates hormone receptor status

A Swedish study published in the journal Cancer Causes and Control suggested that the risk of breast cancer recurring in 600 patients taking tamoxifen was reduced with coffee consumption. Researchers evaluated hormone receptor status and also found modifications related to coffee consumption. What are your thoughts about this study – would the results encourage you to recommend coffee consumption to your breast cancer patients?

Can Coffee Bean Extract Help Control Blood Sugar?

A small study conducted in India suggests that there is association between extract of coffee beans and blood glucose control. Thirty normal weight men and women without diabetes were evaluated and green coffee bean extract appeared to lower blood glucose in those individuals.  What do you typically recommend to patients with blood glucose control issues? Have you recommended green coffee bean extract before?

Green Tea and Coffee May Cut Stroke Risk

IMG_0479_1Researchers followed 82,369 Japanese people without cardiovascular disease (CVD) for 13 years, assessing their green tea and coffee consumption and its effects on stroke incidence. The cohort study found that those who drank 2-3 cups a day of green tea reduced the risk of CVD and stroke by 14%, while those who drank 4 cups or more reduced this risk by 20%. Also, those who consumed coffee 3-6 times a week showed a 11% reduced risk of CVD and stroke, while those who drank coffee 1 cup or at least 2 cup a day reduced this risk by 20% and 19%, respectively. What other disease states have shown a benefit with green tea and coffee consumption?

Faux pas! Food fraud on the rise.

ID-10090192A new study by the U.S Pharmacopeial Convention (USP) found 800 new accounts of food fraud. The USP describes food fraud in the study as “the fraudulent addition of non-authentic substances or removal or replacement of authentic substances without the purchaser’s knowledge for economic gain to the seller.”  The new study established the most frequently fraudulent products are milk, coffee, saffron, honey, and spices committed by manufactures. Young Adults Are Swapping Soda for Coffee


A new survey from the NPD group which tracks the American publics’ eating and drinking trends, found that young adults (18-24 years old) are in increasing numbers consuming coffee rather than soda to get their energy buzz.  Although coffee has health benefits, it can be disruptive to one’s sleep cycles.  When did you become aware of the negative aspects of soda consumption?  Has your coffee consumption been affecting your sleeping pattern?
