Faux pas! Food fraud on the rise.

ID-10090192A new study by the U.S Pharmacopeial Convention (USP) found 800 new accounts of food fraud. The USP describes food fraud in the study as “the fraudulent addition of non-authentic substances or removal or replacement of authentic substances without the purchaser’s knowledge for economic gain to the seller.”  The new study established the most frequently fraudulent products are milk, coffee, saffron, honey, and spices committed by manufactures. Honey may provide symptomatic relief for children with nocturnal cough caused by upper respiratory tract infections.

The journal Pediatrics published a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled study comparing the effects of honey products to placebo on nocturnal cough and sleep difficulty due to upper respiratory tract infections. Researchers randomly assigned 300 children from Israel and found that children who took honey had fewer coughs compared to children who received placebo.  What are some of your favorite medicinal uses of honey?
